Insta-biz Spotlight – Whimsy Woods

THIS WEEK ON THE KABLOOIE BLOG… @whimsywoods

I never realised how much I loved the world of doll houses and miniature things til I discovered Jennifer Macfarlane’s business – Whimsy Woods!  Scrolling through Jennifer’s Instagram Feed is like an enchanted walk through a miniature world.

Jennifer is a busy and clever mumma who, in between caring for young kids and her busy life, manages to spend time completely renovating doll houses and their furniture and creating the most amazing on trend and personalised decor for it. Read on to find out more….

1 Tell us 5 things about you that we might not know!

– I am a Canadian Australian, I moved here 8 years ago in search of an endless summer. It’s way too cold in Canada!
– I have been a Registered Nurse for 13 years. After having my daughter I decided I wanted to get away from the crazy stressful career and chase a bit of a creative dream.
– I have two little ones. My son is 3 1/2 and my daughter is 1 1/2. They keep me very busy!!! We also have 2 dogs and three chickens!!!
– All of my work is done after 7:30 pm or at nap times!!! One tired mum here!!
– Some of my favourite things to do are: travel, scuba dive, creating things and sleep! lol

2 Tell us about your personal style….

My personal style is relaxed and beachy…. maybe it’s more like frumpy mum?!! You don’t catch me in heels and skirts very often!

3 How about household style?

My household style is rustic, beachy and a hint of tropical. We live in a house that backs onto rainforest so our natural surroundings really inspired my interior decor. There’s a lot of natural and neutral in our house.

4 what is your inspiration, or what triggered Whimsy Woods?

I started refinishing vintage furniture and had a plan to give things a whimsical twist for children’s rooms. I happened to have a doll house that I just quickly did up to sell (nothing special) and I had soo many people who wanted to buy it. I then did a second one and had people lined up for that one as well. So it all went from there. With each house, I ended up having so much encouragement and interest that I set my focus on developing a business plan around doll houses and decor. It was before doll house renovations became a massive thing! I didn’t even have Instagram at that point either.

5 What do you love most about what you do?

I love creating something unique and special. Doll houses have a way of captivating the soul and they seem to be the one toy that little girls keep and pass on to their children. I love that I get to make these heirlooms very personal and each item I make reflects the little person I am making it for. I love everything about what I do!

6 What do you love to do with your kids?

I love being crazy and wild with my kids! We love to dance and sing in the living room, go to the beach, scootering around, catching critters in the back yard, playing with our animals, star gazing, water fights and lots of cuddles.

7 What is your idea of an ideal day?

An ideal day would be one where I get to shower in the morning before the screaming starts! lol  😂😂 The kids both have a nap at the same time so I can squeeze in an hour of work!! Days that we’re all happy and having a good time.

8 what’s a goal for your business in 2016?

My goal for this year is to continue to make really cute and special things and really get my name out there… I have so many awesome things in my head and I can’t wait to create them and show them to everyone. I am branching into boys items next and I have so many cool ideas for this. I also have some exciting collaborations coming to the table this year.

Insta-Mum spotlight – Fiona from @fee_loves_

This week I caught up with Fiona, the style savvy mum behind the eye catching Instagram account @fee_loves_ .  As well as having a gift for styling and kids decor, this lovely lady is also a strong supporter of shopping small and handmade.  I LOVE scrolling through her gorgeous Instagram feed!  If you haven’t seen it yet – go check it out, it’s addictive 🙊

How would you describe your style?

Style // When it comes to the children’s rooms I love bright, happy and busy spaces. I love using handmade pieces in their rooms especially as main features. The other rooms in the house are very minimal and white with soft touches of colour.

What is your favourite thing to do with your kids?

I love baking with the kids, especially Michael who is almost four as he loves it and wants to be a chef when he is older…this week anyway. We all enjoy the veggie patch planting, watering and harvesting.

If you could do anything, describe your ideal day!

I think my ideal day would start with the kids sleeping in. A little trip down to Barwon Heads to watch the kids paddle in the rock pools and some fish and chips on the beach for lunch. A nice lazy afternoon at home just enjoying each other. A lovely meal and wine with the hubby to end the day.

Can you tell us some of your top store picks for shopping small and handmade?

There are so many handmade stores I love on Instagram! @piccolostudio_sarah for quilts and cushions, @ellieshm for beautiful handmade dresses, and @quackaryhandmade for some funky boys threads.

I love @mitahli_designs for kids decor, @blooms.butterflies.doll.studio for stunning dolls, and @bunyetskahandmade for crochet rugs.

@littlelopbunnies, @rhapsodyandthread, @littlepeachhandmade, and @hellolucy for gorgeous softies.

Some new stores to watch?

@feltinbloom is a new store that make beautiful felt hair accessories.  And @littlewildoak is another new store launching this month with gorgeous name plaques!

Do you have any big goals for 2016?

This year I would really like to start my own product photography business but it is only in the very, very early stages but I hope 2016 is the year I can get started.

Insta-Mum Spotlight: Kellie from My Shopping Dreams

InstaBlog in the Spotlight: My Shopping Dreams
If you’re not following @my_shopping_dreams on Instagram or Facebook, get on it! I LOVED finding out more about the face behind the Instablog – Kellie Varidel, mum of two, shopping queen and bargain hunter extraordinaire!

What are 5 fast facts about you?
✏️I’m a Capricorn, ✏️I was obsessed with the Beatles in highschool, ✏️I eat porridge for breakfast most days, ✏️I have travelled from Brisbane to Cairns in a Kombi camper, ✏️I work at a major tourist attraction.

How would you describe your style?
My style is definitely eclectic. That goes for everything from music, to movies, clothes and homewares.

What is your fave thing to do with your kids?
My favourite thing to do with my kids is laugh! Nothing gives me greater joy than making my 2 munchkins laugh.

Describe your ideal day….
My ideal day would be a sleep in, brunch at a nice cafe, some pampering (hair, nails, facial etc), a few hours of shopping (of course), then a date night with my husband. I rarely get kid free time, so my ideal day would be some “me time”. I’m sure a few mums can relate.
(Oh, we totally can!! 🙊)

What are your goals for 2016?
In 2016, I have a couple of goals. My main personal goal is to improve my physical well being and fitness. My goal for ‘My Shopping Dreams’ is to keep sharing amazing finds; and to feature more handmade businesses and local Sunshine Coast businesses.

What is the inspiration behind My Shopping Dreams?
I started My Shopping Dreams as therapy initially, after being diagnosed with post natal depression late last year. Shopping is something I enjoy doing and did fairly frequently, so I thought I would turn a favourite past time into an outlet for helping others discover good deals and awesome finds. I was stoked to find so many other like minded woman (shopaholics) and to now be part of an amazing Instagram community.

Shop Small Spotlight: Tillie.Frank.Designs

InstaBiz in the Spotlight: Tillie Frank Designs
Love on trend, gorgeous home decor? Then you’ll love everything from Lauren at Tillie Frank Designs!! She’s also a gifted photographer and designer…I was so excited to catch up with Lauren and find out more about her and her business!

What are 5 fast facts about you?
✏️I took 4 years to complete a double bachelor at uni doing a crazy 5 units a semester and also working fifo.
✏️If I could own an animal of choice it would be a pig.
✏️I am also a qualified gymnastics coach, gymnastics has been a huge part of my life.
✏️I actually really enjoy wakeboarding. Much to my surprise.
✏️I’d secretly love to be a photojournalist. Running wild in the world with no attachments!

How would you define your household style?
My home is a mixture of black and white and all sorts. I change my house more than my underwear and get bored of styles! I’m constantly at a crossroad. I love modern and scandi, love white, but also just don’t want to be like everyone else. My style is what we can afford!

What is your inspiration for Tillie Frank Designs?
My inspiration for Tillie Frank is probably the same as most small business women, independence and contribution to our family doing something that I love. I started Tillie Frank as purely my photography business and expanded into homewares, I do what I do when I can. I felt that after completing a double bachelor in the field surely I could start my own if I couldn’t find a job out there!

What is your idea of an ideal day?
My ideal day would be flying with family and close friends who ride, to the best dirtbike track in the world, trialing the best new range of bikes and gear, cold beers and a bbq.

What’s a goal for you in 2016?
In 2016 I hope to expand in my homewares range with a couple of new items on the market, however it won’t be my main goal. I am looking into broaching new areas with my true passion – photography. I also will be testing the waters and advertising my availibilty for logo and business card design. After being approached by a fellow small business and then word of mouth it has landed me with 6 gigs in the last 2 months!
